Suuqsade school
Project name: construction of suqsade primary school
Location: Suqsade village, Sahil region, Somaliland
Donor : Impulsis
Implemented by: SAREDO
Partners: Daryeel foundation, Berbera municipality and Suqsade community
Project duration: 4 months
Direct beneficiaries: 10,000 (Suqsade village residents)
Suuqsade town has a population of about 10000 inhabitant, half of this figure reside the surrounding rural areas, thus the town is a center for all social services including education, health care etc.
these communities mainly farmers and pastoralists send their children to a small school there (from grade 1 upto 6) primary/intermediate to at least receive some form of basic education.
The number of class-rooms available are 6 with 6 teachers, The town has not even a complete system of basic education usually from grade 1 up to 8 in Somaliland Education Form.
The previous school building in Suuqsade consisted of 6 classrooms with only 6 teachers before the construction of the current three classrooms. So the availability of three new classrooms for the town will be a great benefit and a permanent solution of a long lasting present and future educational problem in Suuqsade area.
The completion of the three new class rooms that will be occupy the missing grade levels of 6, 7 and 8 for the school will contribute much to the education system of this rural area. This will save cost and time for many rural school children instead of moving from their hometown to the other distant neighboring towns and/or villages who have already got the opportunity of complete education system.
CONSTRUCTION
The main objective was the construction of the three urgently needed classrooms and set-up of a school feeding programme.
So SAREDO has planned and categorized the main tasks of the construction; by initially;
1.Visiting the town and taking firsthand information from the community as well as the schoolteachers, students, and Suuqsade elders.
2.Conducting an Educational Analysis research in the site.
3.Starting the Construction.
4.Provision of desks, and other educational materials.
5.Recruiting three new teachers for the school. The ministry of education supported the recruitment program and will pay for the salary of the new teachers.
6.Starting a better academic year for the school children in Sept 2007.
Through out the working period SAREDO has noticed the extent to which the town inhabitants need the availability of other classrooms. For the Students they have been learning with overcrowded environment, which is again making the learning process more difficult.
Of course the grade 5 students have been complaining more. Their faces could be felt from a dead hope of continuing further education, since the current school lacks grades 6, 7 and 8. And even if there were a chance to obtain the classrooms there should have been a gap from the number of school teachers as well as currently available education resources / materials
CONCLUSION
Despite the fact that Suuqsade town Community has played a vital role in the construction of the school, indeed they were very happy for the whole process bearing in mind that the availability of extra classrooms will be a great opportunity for the town dwellers, especially for the mass number of young children.
SAREDO as an organization has been enjoying with the local community as all other partners including BMA, JCC, plus the DF and there has been created well-collaborated environment for the operations occupying the social needs of the community.
On the other hand, SAREDO has gained a lot experience in working the education sector of Somaliland and it hopes its continuation. Since working in education sector in Somaliland could be road map for the country’s overall development.
During the project in Suuqsade many other towns and villages throughtout the Saahil region that lack basic educational facilitities have requested for the assistance of SAREDO. Therefore SAREDO has commited itself to continue to work on basic educational projects in the Saahil region. If we want to reach the Millenium Goal nr.2 in providing primary education to all by the target date of 2015, then there is a lot to do in this region.
We hope therefore that Daryeel Foundation and Impulsis continue their assistance and support in the future.
